I do this test when I suspect an overgrowth of either bacteria or yeast in the bowel. The commonest symptom of either problem is wind, gas and bloating.
This test measures the amount of simple and complex alcohols along with some short chain fatty acids in the plasma. Fermentation in the upper gut is also looked for by taking a small dose of glucose before the test.
In a healthy gut there should be low levels of the various alcohols. Results above the normal range indicate an imbalance of gut flora such as bacterial or yeast overgrowth. For further information and treatment suggestions see gut dysbiosis, management of gut dysbiosis in Bowel problems.
SAMPLE
This test is performed on a blood sample.
KIT
The kit for this test includes a fluoride oxalate blood tube, two 500mg glucose capsules and a sachet with 4 grammes of glucose powder, packaging materials for transporting the blood sample(s) in the post, and a request form.
INSTRUCTIONS
To complete the test:
You need to fast for at least 3 hours and refrain from drinking alcohol for 24 hours before taking the glucose;
Swallow the two glucose capsules with a glass of water (80-100ml) in which you have dissolved the glucose powder. The glucose solution prevents the capsules from disintegrating in the stomach and this ensures that an adequate amount of glucose passes into the duodenum. The most convenient time for most patients to do this test is first thing in the morning before breakfast. The blood should be taken one hour after the glucose load (you have to make arrangements with your doctor/nurse in advance); have the blood taken one hour later and put in the blood tube (see blood letting information), make sure that your name and date of birth are clearly marked on the tube. Check that your details are correct on the request form. Using the packaging materials provided prepare the sample for posting in the pre-paid addressed envelope. Please, make sure that the request form is sent along with the samples. Do not post the sample on a Friday. Please also send your GP's details so I can write to him/her with the result and suggestions for management. Please also send me any diagnoses you may already have.
- Please note that there is an additional interpretation fee for my letter to your GP. See Ordering Tests for more details.
