DESCRIPTION

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is often caused by infections which are sexually acquired. There may be a whole range of symptoms from nothing at all to pelvic pain, bleeding between periods, unexplained fatigue, unexplained fever, vaginal discharge and infertility. It may present with peritonitis, in which case urgent admission to hospital is required.

This is a serious diagnosis which needs to be investigated seriously by a trained physician. Look in Yellow Pages for your local "special clinic".

You need at least a high vaginal swab, cervical swab and possibly blood tests looking for antibodies to bacteria and virues along with urine samples and possibly a urethral swab.

I can refer you, if necessary, to The Doctors' Laboratory if you cannot get these tests done locally. Their profile comprises: mycoplasma and ureaplasma (from a high vaginal swab), chlamydia trachomatis by PCR, Herpes antigen, hepatitis B antigen, HIV antibodies, HDRL & TPHA.

If you do have any positive tests, then your sexual partner also needs to be screened.

SAMPLE

The tests are performed on a sample of blood, a sample of urine and a vaginal swab (this swab has to be taken at The Doctors' Laboratory and so you will need to make an appointment with the lab).
